CLINICS and RESIDENCIES
Norlan Bewley has one goal for his clinics and residencies: the advancement of low brass through
education and opportunity. To Norlan, teaching and performing music are two completely separate
jobs. Even though they have many aspects in common, they require very different types of skill
and focus. He is always delighted to perform, but at his clinics and residencies the education
of the participants is first and foremost. He wants the low brass to be "stars for the day"
and carry that experience with them in everything they do.
Performance Through Participation Clinic
Dissatisfied with typical "sit and listen" style clinics, Norlan Bewley has developed the
Performance Through Participation approach for clinics and residencies. Participants bring their
instruments, becoming a Low Brass Ensemble for the clinic. Norlan rehearses the ensemble on
4-part music he has written for these clinics, demonstrating technique and fundamentals in a
manner that allows participants to apply them immediately. Everyone learns everything first hand
while in a playing situation, increasing understanding and retention; plus they play great music
that they get to keep!
A Performance Through Participation clinic can be done with a variety of participants, from a
large number of players at varied skill levels to a school's low brass section. The music comes
in progessive levels of difficulty, and the selections chosen are tailored to each clinic. The
participants are organized into groups of first and second trombones, euphoniums/baritones, and
tubas. After some focused warm-ups, the "rehearsal" clinic begins.
During the Performance Through Participation "rehearsal", Norlan uses the music as a basis to
demonstrate and teach the important fundamentals of low brass performance, giving the participants
an immediate opportunity to apply the information. Tone production and projection, breath support,
range, articulations, slide and valve technique, musical styles, and ensemble skills are just some
of the subjects addressed. The low brass also benefit from playing music where they are featured
and each part demands skill in every musical role.
A Performance Through Participation clinic is 3 hours long, consisting of a 90 minute Low Brass
Ensemble rehearsal, a 30 minute trombone sectional, a 30 minute euphonium/tuba sectional, and a
30 minute final rehearsal/run-through.
CLINICS
Clinics with Norlan Bewley are single events, such as the Performance Through Participation clinic,
which are typically 3 hours in length. Read more about different types of
clinics.
RESIDENCIES
Residencies with Norlan Bewley are a series of events and activities scheduled on a daily basis
(7 hours), from one day up to five days in length. Compared to clinics, residencies allow a more
in-depth teaching approach and retention as there is more time for everyone involved. Advancement
through education is the goal, so longer residencies are discounted in price compared to shorter
ones. Read more about different types of residencies.
